Chapter 10
Marcus was flying low to the ground. He passed over Mish and looked at the road ahead of her. There were no undead ambushes, no towns, and no people in danger the entire trip. He turned back and relayed the information to her. She yelled up to him, “Murphy’s Law; it never fails.”
She continued to run and Marcus slowed down so he stayed with her just incase her prediction came out to be true. The group came to a large clearing where the airstrip was. Two 747 jet airliners and a cargo jet prepared to take flight at one end of the airstrip. Mish saw Dragoon in one of the planes and she ran to him. Zack clung to her for dear life as he was whip lashed around. Marcus flew to the side of the cargo jet and nearly threw Liz off him. He stayed behind as the jet started to take flight. Zack grabbed Liz before she could jump out after him. Marcus looked ahead of the runway and knew what he had to do.
He took flight and headed for the thousand strong behemoth army that covered the runway. Marcus pressed on his wings with all his might and chopped the strays on the runway apart with the talons of his wings. When he arrived at the end of the runway, he realized that he only killed a small fraction of the force that would rip the planes out of the sky. Marcus breathed a flame larger than any he ever produced. He burned many of them in a great nuclear fire.
As he flew over them one of the larger undead jumped higher than he imagined possible. Marcus was pulled down into a sea of behemoths as his wings were pulled farther than they were meant to go. They started to pile on him. It was as if they would rather imprison him in their combined flesh than let their prey get away. Marcus knew that he was lost, so he relaxed every muscle in his body and let them pile on him. The pressure was too great for him to breathe a flame, and the muscles in his wings were not strong enough to pull him up. Then something happened that he did not expect.
Marcus heard a scream that awakened a fire in him greater than anything he ever felt before. The scream was that of Liz, and Marcus knew from the nature of the noise that she was in mortal danger. Suddenly, the weight on his shoulders was nearly half of hat it was. The undead didn’t seem so big. Marcus pressed with all his might and built up a flame in his chest. When he released it, a roar was formed that could have been heard for miles around. Marcus dug his way through the undead, until he saw daylight.
Marcus continued to climb, and only stopped when he could spread his wings to take flight.
When he was in the air, he could see Liz hanging off the open door of the plane he placed her in. Right next to her, a behemoth clutched to the aircraft. It was trying to reach for her. Liz was losing her grip, and nobody onboard could help her. If anyone took of their straps, the air current would rip them out of the plane. Liz’s handhold snapped, and she fell away from the plane with three hundred feet below her.
She felt her feet touch solid earth and she knew that she would be gone a split second later. If the Grim Reaper was ready for her, then he was greatly displeased. A hundred feet before the ground, Marcus grabbed her with a single massive claw. He tried to catch up with the airplanes, but they flew beyond his reach. Marcus gave up on the planes and turned to the west, where he hoped to find some relief.
When he found a clearing in a large wooded area, Marcus landed and let Liz off. She yelled, “Hey! Why’d you throw me off?”
“I didn’t throw you off.”
Marcus realized that his voice was much deeper than before. Marcus looked around and wondered how young the trees around him were, as he stood well above them. He looked down at Liz, and his heart would have skipped a beat, if he had a heart.
Liz was looking the other way at the time. She had grown accustomed to having a large shadow at her back, but he seemed to be right behind her. Liz had no idea why he was acting so strange. First he threw her off him, and then he started getting awkwardly close to her. Now his head was less than a few feet above her. Liz didn’t see his head, but she felt his breath. Liz turned to look him over, and she stopped breathing.
