Chapter 20
Marcus turned his head to the wall slightly to the right of the cell. He turned his head in the relatively small hallway and set his eyes upon the inhabitants. Marcus saw two men standing around a radio, listening to the battle on the other island via military communications. Both turned to look at Marcus. Thomas smiled, but the other stared at him with perfect emerald green eyes. Like the rest of the titanicus, his eye reflected light like a mirror. Marcus looked him up and down and recognized him as the Science Theory Covenant founder and chief engineer. In short, Isaac was Marcus’s superior.
He looked different to Marcus. Isaac was always one to keep himself well kept, but he seemed too perfect; as if he had changed his titanicus form to make himself look better. His skin was flawless and his muscles were toned to perfection. His silver hair was shorter than it was before and he no longer held it in a pony tail like he used to. He wore a silver and violet leather jacket that reminded Marcus of a videogame character he did not erase simply because he enjoyed the design. Isaac did not look happy to see him, as Marcus disobeyed direct orders to not change the scale of the titanicus to make them their current size. He stared at Marcus with such a furious gaze, Marcus nearly looked away.
After what seemed like hours, Thomas stood and said, “Well, are you going to get us out of here or what?”
Marcus said, “Move to the far side of the cage, so I can release you.”
“Don’t bother,” Isaac said, “they set charges on the gates. If you take them out, Thomas will be killed.”
“Are there any charges in the wall behind you?”
“No, but seeing some old friends scream and cry as they are pulled underground by giant spiked chains tends to leave a person shaken up.”
“I’ll do it. Stay away from the wall and I will get you out.”
They did as he requested and stood at the edge of their cell. Marcus pulled his head out of the prison slowly so he would not destroy the building’s foundations. He lifted his tail and dug a small hole in the structure just large enough for their bodies to fit through.
Thomas was the first to press his head outward, but he looked down and stopped moving. Marcus opened his mouth and pressed his head to the wall. He felt Thomas land on his tongue and Isaac soon followed. Marcus lowered them to the ground and let them out. Thomas remarked, “If this whole god thing doesn’t work out, you could always be an exotic elevator.”
“We aren’t gods, we’re titans,” said Isaac.
“Whatever you are, help me down.”
Isaac helped Thomas jump off Marcus’s high lower jaw. When they were down, Marcus let his back half fall off the platform and into the water. He asked, “You mentioned earlier that you saw the others.”
“They put up a rigorous fight, but now the militia holds them hostage in some kind of giant dome beneath here.”
“And you would know much on that subject.”
It was common knowledge around the lab that Isaac helped the government build massive underground complexes and facilities. He probably knew every chamber below them by heart. Marcus did not wait for an answer and said, “Are the chambers large enough for my form to walk unhindered?”
“Absolutely. I built the lab entirely for experimenting on larger projects.”
“Then I will go after our friends. See to it that Thomas reaches Angle Island in one piece. Give them whatever aid you can.”
No matter what past they had, it was obvious that Marcus was the authority here. Isaac did not say anything. He simply nodded and turned away. Marcus thought that Isaac might be able to help the fight on the other island; he was, after all, Marcus’s equal.
Marcus took flight and circled the island, hoping to find some kind of opening. He saw a small square on the ocean floor and dived into the water. When he reached it, Marcus could see a small doorway just large enough for a human. He pressed a single talon in and a human in diving gear franticly swam out. Marcus held him in a fist and said, “I will release you if you open this gate.”
He let go of the man and he swam back into the structure. Marcus pondered the idea of going after him again but all his attention focused elsewhere as a crack in the ocean floor spread open into a large doorway. Marcus dropped into the chasm below him and sunk deeper into the cave. He did not worry about security, as Isaac was too proud of his secrecy skills and did not bother adding security. Marcus stopped sinking a mile below the earth. There, he found another doorway. When it opened, he felt the pressure drop to the point where life could exist. He looked up and saw that the door above him had closed. Marcus had only one direction to go, forward.
