Chapter 6
Two middle aged people started to approach him. They stayed outside of his maw’s range (which was wise, had Marcus been any other dragon). They started to look around him and decided to approach the beast. Marcus guessed from their smell that they were Jack’s parents, and Marcus opened a single eye. They froze in place, but Marcus chose to stay still. His eye followed them and found the other seven men behind the surrounding bushes. He lifted up his head and moved it close to the parents. He said, “I would guess that you are looking for your son.”
The couple was speechless. One of them finally built up the courage to say, “Yes we are, his name is-“
“Jack, so he told me. Approach me, and you can take him. I do not think anyone would pass the opportunity to sleep in the care of my kind, and I don’t think he will go home lightly. I even told him to go home, but he stayed, so I let him sleep.”
The father walked up to him and the mother followed. Marcus pointed at his claw, and the father approached with great caution. He was in the danger zone, and nobody could protect him should Marcus change his mind. Marcus moved his head a little closer and the couple froze again. Marcus ushered them onward and they climbed his claw. Their son was still in a ball between his fingers, and he cried when the parents woke him.
Marcus leaned his head inward and licked the boy. He stopped crying and Marcus said, “Don’t worry; you can visit me tomorrow if you’d like. And you can meet Liz.”
The boy lit up, and Marcus moved his head to the side where he placed it on the ground and made it look like he was sleeping, so any others could approach. Marcus let himself fall into a light sleep until something happened, and he felt something touch his tail. He could hear feet moving and the smell of the adolescent human was in the air. He felt the human hit his tail and run into a nearby bush. Marcus remembered how some fools would do this to a bull and run to the fence before it knew what they did. If Marcus learned one thing from his childhood, it was that if you mess with a bull, you will be punished by horns.
Marcus let them do it one more time before he moved his tail and threw the adolescent to his head. He opened his mouth and she flew right past it. Marcus caught her in his claw and placed his head on the ground again. He shushed her and she went quiet. One of the boys said, “Oh my God; he ate her!”
Marcus turned his head around and moved his claw so she could see her friends run. Marcus looked back to her and placed her on the ground. He said, “You are lucky that I am in a good mood. Now go home.”
“Oh come on! But then they’ll know it was not real.”
Marcus let her stay for the night and she lay down between his claw and his torso. Marcus put his head down yet again and waited for something else to wake him up. Sure enough, the girl’s father came along with a shotgun. He said, “Give me back my daughter you-”
“Daddy, I’m right over here.”
“You ate her?”
Marcus lifted his neck and the girl walked out. She looked back at Marcus and walked right by her father, who followed her. Marcus placed his head down again, but someone else was watching from close by. They stayed away, so he chose to try and sleep. He eventually fell into a trance, where he could organize his thoughts again. He could smell Liz and awakened only to find her already sleeping on his claw. He lowered his wing over her and fell asleep again. It was seven hours later that the people started to assemble.
